Loved by locals and visitors alike, this celebration is in honor of our little furry friend, the woolly worm, who helps predict what Winter has in store. Always held the third week in October, crowds gather to see which one worm will have the privilege of the forecast. In addition to the competition, the festival features live entertainment, over 140 food and craft vendors, rides, and much more. You won't want to miss the excitement, the camaraderie, or the fun!

Autumn at Oz
You guessed it-- a stimulating celebration of Fall in Eastern America's highest town along the Yellow Brick Road with Dorothy, Toto, and friends, held in early October. The 1 1/2 to 2 hour featured tour highlights Auntie Em's farm and Emerald City, among other favorite stops. Guests also enjoy a mini-museum, live entertainment, hay rides, food, face painting, and even a small petting zoo. The party is for everyone!

Oktoberfest
What better way to enjoy German beer and brats than in a ski town where you can take in the picturesque fall foliage, crisp mountain weather, and a weekend full of festival activities from 10am to 5pm? The live entertainment, Bavarian cuisine, over 40 featured artisans and craftspeople, plus the children's activity center, ensure a fun-filled time for the whole family.

Grandfather Mountain Highland Games
A gathering of Scottish Clans, guests, families, sponsors, patrons, and fans is held on the second full weekend of July, where plaid colors are seen and bagpipes are heard all across the mountain setting. Opening ceremonies, athletic competitions, food, music, and dancing together produce this excellent display of culture, education, and entertainment.

Annual Roasting of the Hog
On the Saturday closest to July 4th, Beech Mountain hosts this Independence Day celebration with a Southern flare. The family-centered event features food cooked by local firefighters, including what is said to be the best barbeque in the High Country, musical entertainment, children’s activities, and an impressive fireworks display after dark.

Riverwalk Arts Festival
For more than 30 years, the Avery Arts Council has hosted local artists and Appalachian crafters from all over the southeast in an arts and crafts marketplace. Taking place in charming downtown Newland, the featured artists display their handmade items and goods. The gathering has something for the whole family with live music, food, a children's corner, and, of course, the celebrated original art.

New Year's Celebration
Bring in the New Year mountain style at Sugar Mountain's ski resort. While all ages are welcome to listen to the band, partygoers must be 21 or older. The party features hors d'oeuvres, party favors, a champagne toast, torchlight parade, and fireworks.

Shag at Sugar
An afternoon centered around the dance floor, featuring shag dancing and lessons, is a guaranteed good time. The festival includes live entertainment, food vendors, public golf and tennis, a raffle, and fireworks. There's more, for the children-- inflatables, face painting, and bubbles! All of this fun for the whole family, and admission is free.
